Lake Simcoe Ice Fishing

This is our very first post on “Take a Kid Fishing” and we hope you enjoy the video and photos.

Last week Austin and I took a trip to Lake Simcoe in search of Lake Trout and Whitefish. This was Austin’s very first time targeting these spectacular fish through the ice. I wanted to give Austin a great first experience, so I hired one of the top guides on Lake Simcoe, Tom, from Fatal Force Outfitters .

We met Tom in Orillia, Ontario at 7:00 am. We loaded up the sleds and headed out for the day. Tom had us set up in no time and put a rod in Austin’s hand right away. Well, it sure didn’t take long….. not 8 minutes into the day Austin was hooked up. In the video below you will see a very excited 7 year old battle his first ever Lake Simcoe Lake Trout. Tom was simply amazing with Austin and was very patient with him, and as you can see in the video, he did everything possible to make sure Austin landed this beautiful Laker, even putting his whole arm in to free up the fishing line from the ice below.

I have watched this video many times already and it puts a huge smile on my face every time. Austin’s comment at the end, “look at him!”, will be forever in my mind for the rest of my life.

This day was all about Austin, I didn’t even fish until the last two hours of the day, as I wanted to just watch my son fish and land monster Lake Trout and Whitefish all day.

Austin hooked and landed two Lake Trout and two Whitefish all on his own(except for getting the fish out of the hole). Tom is not one of those guides that hooks the fish and hands you the rod. He actually had Austin doing everything and talked him through it all. Now that is how you learn to fish.

Austin is already asking ” when can we go fishing with Tom again?” 🙂

I will be doing a full review on Tom and Fatal Force Outfitters very soon.
